This bridge replaced a dangerous low water crossing in Allensville, West Virginia, which had been the scene of many serious accidents during high water events. The 346 foot long Back Creek crossing employs hybrid steel plate girders to support the riding surface. A hybrid scheme makes efficient use of the more expensive high performance grade 70 weathering steel. Using the grade 70 steel in locations where its high strength is needed and less expensive grade 50 weathering steel in other areas results in considerable cost savings.
