Palmer teamed with TL Wallace Construction and Gulf Coast Pre-Stress to provide a cost savings to the Mississippi DOT on this bridge design. Original plans for the 3158 foot long bridge in Harrison County, Mississippi, called for precast concrete I-beam approach spans leading up to the Main Channel Unit, which was supported by steel plate girders. Steel girders were chosen because span lengths of the three span Main Channel Unit exceeded span lengths of typical pre-tensioned prestressed concrete beams.
To reduce costs, 78 inch deep post-tensioned prestressed concrete spliced I-girders replaced the steel plate girders for the Main Channel Unit. Splicing the girders reduced the individual piece lengths and improved the efficiency of the structure by making it fully continuous.
