| STATE ROUTE 254 OVER THE BLACK RIVER
|
This bridge is 1420 feet long and crosses approximately 85 feet above the Black River and its floodplain. The original design plans called for a six-span, steel plate girder bridge supported on two-column, hollow, tapered piers. The bridge was re-designed through a VECP to a twelve-span, prestressed concrete girder bridge supported on single column hammerhead piers. Total savings on the project were approximately $2,000,000.
An access road, bike path, wetlands, and the main channel of the Black River Piers were spanned with strategic placement of piers. Also, judiciously locating fixed piers and expansion joints allowed strip seals to be used instead of more expensive finger joints. Extensive corrosion protection was also incorporated into the re-designed bridge.
