US-119 Burning Fork Bridges

The twin bridges at Burning Fork span a connector road tying old US-119 into the new US-119 in Pike County, Kentucky, and serve as the state’s first application of High Performance Weathering Steel. The original concept for the project was to cross the valley, Burning Fork Creek, and the connector road with a more than 700-foot long bridge. Instead, we proposed filling the valley with the excess material available from the deep roadway cuts at the approaches. Burning Fork Creek would be re-directed through a 1000-foot long culvert at the bottom of the fill; a 185-foot long single span bridge, constructed at the top of the fill, would allow for crossing the connector road. Palmer’s proposed bridge was reduced in length and height and provided a use for the available fill, preventing the contractor from having to haul and dispose of the material offsite. This proposal was also a very economical solution because it saved the client approximately $4 million when compared with the original concept.
