The Simon Kenton Bridge carries US 62 over the Ohio River between Maysville, Kentucky and Aberdeen, Ohio. The three-span suspension bridge opened to traffic in 1931.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet let a contract for the rehabilitation and painting of the 70 year-old historic Simon Kenton Suspension Bridge in Maysville, Kentucky. Part of the rehabilitation included a full sidewalk and deck replacement for the main suspension spans. As an alternate to the contract sequence, the low-bid contractor proposed a different sequence of deck replacement. In order to satisfy contract requirements, an analysis was required to show that the alternate deck replacement sequence would have no adverse effects on the structure. Palmer conducted a three-dimensional STRUDL nonlinear analysis of this historic suspension bridge to show that it could endure the alternate deck replacement sequence proposed for its renewal.
