Palmer Engineering Promotes Pedestrian Safety Awareness During National Pedestrian Safety Month

October is National Pedestrian Safety Month, and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is calling on drivers across the nation to slow down, stay alert, and look out for pedestrians.

At Palmer Engineering, safety is at the heart of everything we do. From designing safer intersections to improving walkability in growing communities, our team understands the critical role that infrastructure plays in protecting pedestrians and creating environments where everyone—drivers, cyclists, and walkers alike—can share the road safely.

Pedestrian Safety by the Numbers

Every 72 minutes, a pedestrian is killed in a traffic crash in the United States, and one is injured every eight minutes. In 2023, there were an estimated 68,244 pedestrian injuries and 7,314 fatalities, representing 18% of all traffic deaths. While this marks a 4% decrease from 2022, pedestrian safety remains a national concern that affects every community.

Engineering Safer Communities

Palmer Engineering has long supported local and state initiatives focused on roadway safety and pedestrian-friendly design. Our transportation engineers work with agencies to implement traffic-calming measures, crosswalk visibility enhancements, and ADA-compliant sidewalk improvements that make streets safer for everyone.

These projects—rooted in data, experience, and community input—align directly with NHTSA’s ongoing efforts to reduce pedestrian injuries and fatalities.

Safety Reminders for Drivers

NHTSA reminds motorists to:

  • Use extra caution at night. 77% of pedestrian fatalities in 2023 occurred after dark.

  • Follow posted speed limits, especially in neighborhoods, near schools, and around pedestrians.

  • Drive sober. Alcohol was involved in 46% of all fatal pedestrian crashes last year.

  • Always stop for pedestrians in crosswalks.

  • Never pass vehicles stopped at a crosswalk, as pedestrians may be crossing ahead.

  • Avoid distractions. Put the phone down and focus on the road.

A Timely Reminder During Halloween

October also brings an increase in foot traffic, especially during Halloween festivities. Drivers should be aware that children and families may be out walking, often in costumes that make them harder to see. Slowing down and being vigilant can make a life-saving difference.

Safety Tips for Pedestrians

Pedestrians can also take steps to protect themselves:

  • Use sidewalks and crosswalks whenever possible.

  • Stay visible by wearing reflective clothing or carrying a flashlight after dark.

  • Avoid distractions and stay alert when crossing streets.

  • Make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the road.

  • Plan a sober walk home if consuming alcohol.

Our Shared Commitment to Safety

At Palmer Engineering, we believe that safe roads start with smart design and responsible behavior. Whether through engineering solutions, public education, or community partnerships, we are committed to creating safer pathways for everyone who travels through our communities.
