I-264 at US 42
JEFFERSON COUNTY, KY
TRANSPORTATION
Construction is rapidly advancing on improvements to the US 42 interchange with I-264 (Watterson Expressway) in east Louisville. Originally initiated with a Planning Study in 2011, the project evolved into a major infrastructure investment, including the construction of a Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI) in coordination with a new VA Hospital in the southeast quadrant. Additional improvements include widening I-264 from Westport Road to I-71 and the incorporation of sound walls for most of the project.
Palmer Engineering led a comprehensive design effort to enhance safety, mobility, and long-term corridor performance with our partners at AECOM. Cleary Construction is the lead contractor for the $130 million improvement.
Unique Aspects
-
Opportunities
Corridor Improvement: Enhances safety and traffic flow along a high-volume, high-growth roadway in Jefferson County.
Major Investment: Supports regional growth through coordination with a new VA Hospital and significant interstate improvements.
Innovative Solutions: Incorporates advanced traffic modeling and evaluation of modern intersection and access management strategies.
Multimodal Focus: Expands opportunities for pedestrian and bicycle connectivity within a suburban corridor.
-
Challenges
Traffic Demand: Managing heavy volumes and congestion along US 42 and I-264 during phased improvements.
Complex Coordination: Integrating interchange reconstruction, interstate widening, and adjacent development.
Access Management: Balancing roadway efficiency with the need to preserve access to businesses and properties.
Infrastructure Constraints: Coordinating utilities, drainage, and right-of-way within a highly developed corridor.
-
Successes
Long-Term Vision: Advancing a project that has evolved from early planning into a transformative infrastructure improvement.
Data-Driven Design: Leveraging traffic simulation and forecasting tools to guide decision-making and optimize outcomes.
Comprehensive Approach: Integrating roadway, traffic, drainage, and multimodal elements into a unified design strategy.
