Exploring Surveying: Hands-On Activities for Young Learners
At Palmer Engineering, we believe it’s never too early to introduce students to the many careers that help build and shape our communities. One of those important careers is land surveying—the work that happens before roads, bridges, and buildings are even designed.
Our Exploring Surveying resources are designed to help students, families, and educators learn how surveyors measure and map the land. Through fun, hands-on activities, students can explore the tools surveyors use, practice basic mapping and navigation skills, and discover how surveying provides the data engineers rely on to design safe and successful projects.
One of the highlights is our Surveying Activity Book, where students follow Penny and Parker, two land surveyors, as they introduce the tools and skills used to measure and map the land. This interactive activity book includes challenges and activities that help students understand how surveying plays a key role in building roads, bridges, parks, and communities.
Recommended for students in grades 2–5, the activity book is a great way to spark curiosity about surveying and the many careers involved in shaping the world around us.
We’ll continue adding new activities and resources throughout the year, so check back often for more ways to learn about surveying.
